Clifton Robinson MBE, born in Jamaica in 1926, made a significant impact on the field of education in the United Kingdom. After migrating to the UK in 1944 to join the RAF, he pursued higher education and obtained a degree as an Educational Psychologist from Birmingham University. Despite his impressive qualifications, Robinson faced racial discrimination when he applied for a teaching position. The employer initially turned him away, but later reopened the position, revealing the unjust bias against him.

Despite the initial setback, Robinson's determination led him to secure a teaching job at Mellor Street School in Leicester in 1951. This marked a significant milestone as he became the first Black Headteacher in Britain.

Recognising the need for cultural understanding and inclusivity in education, Robinson conducted a study on the children from the West Indies who attended his school. He discovered that despite racial differences, the children formed strong friendships and played together harmoniously. It was the prejudiced views of some parents that threatened to disrupt these bonds.

Clifton Robinson gained recognition for his remarkable encounter with the Leicester branch of the National Front, which took place in the vicinity of his school's playground. This incident has been extensively documented, highlighting his ability to effectively address and overcome extremely challenging situations. In recognition of his exceptional leadership skills, Robinson was appointed as the head teacher of Uplands Junior School in the East Midlands in 1968.

In addition to his contributions to education, Robinson also played a crucial role in promoting equality and justice. In 1973, he was appointed as a Justice of the Peace to the Leicester Magistrates Bench, where he worked to ensure fairness and impartiality in the legal system.

Furthermore, in 1977, Robinson became the Deputy Chairman at the Commission for Racial Equality, where he actively advocated for the rights of marginalised communities. Through his various roles and accomplishments, Clifton Robinson MBE left a lasting legacy as a trailblazer in education and a champion for equality.
