She served as Shadow Home Secretary in Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet from 2016 to 2020 and is an advisor to the Privy Council. Abbott is the first black woman elected to parliament and the longest-serving black MP, currently sitting in the House of Commons as an independent Labour Party member.
