Rosalind Patricia-Anne Howells, Baroness Howells of St Davids, OBE, COG

Born on 10 January 1931, Rosalind Patricia-Anne Howells, Baroness Howells of St Davids OBE COG, is a prominent British Labour politician. Recognised for her contributions to society, she was honoured with an OBE in the 1994 New Year's Honours.

Later, on 21 July 1999, she was appointed as a Life peer and given the title Baroness Howells of St Davids, representing Charlton in the London Borough of Greenwich. The name "St Davids" holds a special significance as it refers to the parish in Grenada where she spent her formative years, situated in the southeastern part of the island. After a remarkable career, she retired from the House of Lords on her birthday, 10 January 2019.

Life and Career

Howells received her education from St Joseph's College, Reading, South West London College, and the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C. She tied the knot with John Charles Howells in 1955, and together they are parents to two daughters.

Throughout her career, Howells held various significant positions such as Director of the Greenwich Racial Equality Council and Community and Equal Opportunities Worker. Additionally, she is a trustee of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and has been an invaluable advisor to the Lawrence family.

Notably, Howells made history as the first black woman to serve on the GLC's Training Board and the first female member of the Court of Governors at the University of Greenwich. She also held the position of Vice Chair at the London Voluntary Service Council and has been actively involved with organisations like the Carnival Liaison Committee and the Greater London Action in Race Equality.

Furthermore, Howells is dedicated to advocating for justice in the realm of race relations and currently serves as a Trustee of the Jason Roberts Foundation. This foundation is committed to offering a variety of sporting opportunities to children and young individuals in both the United Kingdom and Grenada.

In March 2009, Baroness Howells assumed the role of Chancellor at the University of Bedfordshire in Luton, marking the beginning of her tenure in this prestigious position. Alongside her chancellorship, she also holds the position of trustee at St George's University's UK Trust, a role that highlights her commitment to the advancement of education. Additionally, she serves on the board of the Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation (WINDREF), a renowned research institute affiliated with St. George's University.
