Choice FM, Britain's pioneering black radio station, began its journey in the 1990s within a modest studio located in a Brixton housing estate. Despite its humble beginnings, the station quickly surpassed all expectations and achieved remarkable success. The Trinity Gardens studio transformed into a 24-hour music hub, offering a refreshing alternative to mainstream music and serving as a platform to promote talented black artists from around the globe.

On March 31, 1990, Neil Kenlock and Patrick Berry, the visionary co-founders of Choice FM, aired their inaugural show. This groundbreaking broadcast featured an eclectic mix of reggae, hip hop, soul, and soca tracks, captivating listeners with its diverse musical offerings. However, Choice FM's impact extended far beyond its role as a music station. It became a nurturing ground for aspiring entrepreneurs and DJs, providing them with a launching pad for their careers.


Initially, the station's reach was limited to South London, broadcasting on the 96.9 FM frequency. However, the overwhelming success of Choice FM paved the way for expansion. A twin station was established, and a second license was obtained, leading to the birth of Birmingham's very own Buzz FM. This expansion allowed Choice FM to extend its influence and impact to a wider audience, further solidifying its position as a trailblazer in the industry.



Growth

Choice FM's journey from a small studio on a Brixton housing estate to becoming Britain's first black radio station was nothing short of extraordinary. Its commitment to showcasing alternative music, supporting emerging artists, and providing a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs and DJs set it apart from its contemporaries. The station's success not only led to its own expansion but also paved the way for the growth and recognition of black music and culture in the UK.


Choice FM relocated to Borough High Street in 2000 in an effort to expand its audience beyond the Brixton Afro-Caribbean community. The move was strategic, aiming to reach a wider demographic and diversify its listener base. This change in broadcasting location marked a new chapter for the station, as it sought to appeal to a more diverse group of listeners across London.



Rebranding, Change & Controversy

In 2004, Capital Radio Group took over control of Choice FM, leading to another relocation to London's Leicester Square. This move was met with controversy, as it signified a shift away from the station's original South London audience towards a more central location in the capital. The change in control also brought about alterations in the station's music style and DJ lineup, introducing electronic music and welcoming DJs from Kiss.


The rebranding of Choice FM to Capital Xtra in 2013 marked the end of a successful 23-year run for the station. Despite the name change, the station's significant contributions to Black British history, music, and communities have been recognised and celebrated. In 2020, Choice FM's original location at 16-18 Trinity Gardens was honoured with a blue plaque, commemorating the station's establishment and its 31-year anniversary. This recognition serves as a testament to the station's lasting impact and legacy in London's broadcasting history.



Legacy & Honours

Co-founder Neil Kenlock, also a talented photographer, expressed his enthusiasm for Choice FM, highlighting the platform's role in promoting Black history and supporting Black businesses. He emphasised the importance of representation and empowerment within Brixton and other communities, noting the positive impact that their efforts had on the local population. Neil's dedication to showcasing cultural diversity and economic inclusion through Choice FM was evident in his words.



Reflecting on Brixton's cultural and musical significance, Neil envisioned a future where the community would thrive with remarkable architecture, innovative design, and maybe even the potential for a university. He believed in the potential of Brixton to evolve into a vibrant and influential hub, offering opportunities for growth and development. Neil's optimism and forward-thinking approach underscored his commitment to nurturing a strong and prosperous community in Brixton.


Neil's perspective on Choice FM, Brixton’s new blue plaque highlighted the enduring legacy of their work and the importance of inspiring future generations. He viewed the blue plaque as a symbol of hope and motivation for young people, encouraging them to strive for success despite challenges. Neil's belief in the transformative power of recognition and encouragement underscored his commitment to creating a positive impact on the community and fostering a sense of pride and achievement among its members.
