Early Life

Bruce Oldfield's upbringing was deeply influenced by his time in foster care and children's charity, Barnardo's. His father, whom he never knew, had migrated to Britain from Jamaica. Raised by a seamstress during his formative years, he developed a passion for designing and creating clothes. This early exposure to the world of fashion played a crucial role in shaping his future career as a renowned designer.

Transitioning to West Mount, a Dr Barnardo's Children's Home, at the age of 13 marked a significant chapter in Oldfield's life. The move to Ripon provided him with new opportunities and experiences, setting the stage for his growth and development. Subsequently, lodging with a couple in Harrogate further enriched his journey, exposing him to different perspectives and environments.

Oldfield's educational journey was marked by a series of milestones that laid the foundation for his success in the fashion industry. From passing the 11-plus exam to attending prestigious institutions such as Spennymoor Grammar School, Ripon Grammar School, Sheffield City College of Education, and Ravensbourne College, he honed his skills and knowledge. Graduating from St. Martin's School of Art in 1973 was a pivotal moment that catapulted him into the spotlight, showcasing his talent and creativity to the world.

The Bruce Oldfield label was established in 1975, marking the beginning of a new era in the fashion industry. With the launch of ready-to-wear collections for European and American stores, Oldfield quickly gained recognition for his impeccable designs and attention to detail. However, it was in 1978 that he truly made his mark by venturing into the world of couture, creating exquisite garments for individual clients.

Oldfield's talent and creativity did not go unnoticed, and in 1980, he was given the incredible opportunity to design clothes for none other than Diana, Princess of Wales. This collaboration catapulted his career to new heights, solidifying his reputation as a designer of choice for the elite. In 1984, Oldfield took another significant step by opening his first shop, where he showcased both ready-to-wear and couture pieces to an international clientele.

Throughout the 1980s, Oldfield's influence continued to grow, and he expanded his creative endeavours by designing shoes for the prestigious couture house, Rayne. This collaboration allowed him to explore new avenues of design and further establish himself as a versatile and innovative designer.

Fast forward to 2009, and Oldfield once again demonstrated his ability to adapt and evolve with the ever-changing fashion landscape. He opened a second premises in Beauchamp Place, dedicated solely to weddings. This new venture incorporated not only wedding dresses but also veils and a full range of bridal accessories, catering to the needs and desires of brides-to-be.

Honours & Legacy

Oldfield's contributions to the fashion industry have not gone unnoticed. In 1990, he was honoured with the appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his outstanding services to the fashion industry. Furthermore, in 2004, he shared his remarkable journey and experiences in his autobiography, "Rootless."

His talent and expertise have been recognised by prestigious institutions, as he has been awarded Honorary Fellowships to the Royal College of Art and the Universities of Durham and Sheffield. Additionally, Oldfield has held esteemed positions such as Governor of The London Institute from 1999 to 2001 and Trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts from 2000 to 2002. These accolades further solidify his status as a respected figure in the fashion world.

Oldfield has been recognised for his outstanding contributions in the field of fashion and design. In December 2001, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law (Hon DCL) from the University of Northumbria in Newcastle upon Tyne, a testament to his expertise and influence in the industry. Subsequently, in 2005, he received another Honorary Doctorate from the University of Central England, further solidifying his reputation as a distinguished figure in the world of fashion.

Not only has Oldfield been honoured for his remarkable achievements, but he has also been entrusted with prestigious projects by esteemed individuals. In April 2013, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, chose to wear a stunning pale powder-blue Bruce Oldfield dress to the inauguration ceremony for King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. This choice highlights the Duchess's admiration for Oldfield's exquisite designs and impeccable craftsmanship, showcasing his ability to create garments that exude elegance and sophistication.

Looking ahead to the future, Oldfield's talent continues to be recognised on a grand scale. In a significant moment in 2023, Queen Camilla selected Oldfield to design her coronation gown, a momentous occasion that further cements his status as a renowned fashion designer.
