Wandsworth: Windrush Celebrations

Windrush Day takes place on 22 June, the day migrants from the Caribbean arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex in 1948. It honours the contributions of nearly half a million Caribbean people who moved to the UK between then and 1971, shaping the social, cultural and economic life of the nation.

On Wednesday 19 June 2024, a fundraising event took place to support the production of "The Story of Flip Fraser: a Windrush Story".

Flip Fraser's story is known to be one of courage, creativity and unwavering dedication to his community. Part of the Windrush generation, Fraser navigated a new life while cherishing his cultural roots and was the first editor of The Voice newspaper, a vital platform for the Black community in Britain.

His passion for celebrating Black achievement further led him to create the renowned theatrical production "Black Heroes in the Hall of Fame," a one-night show that brings 5,000 years of Black history to life. Through education, entertainment, and empowerment, Fraser's work continues to inspire generations.

Ally Wolf, General Manager of The Clapham Grand, expressed his honour in hosting the event:

“I am honoured to welcome back Joyce Fraser & the Black Heroes Foundation to The Clapham Grand. As a venue built 124 years ago to serve and entertain the communities of Battersea, it fills us with pride to shine a light on the Windrush Generation who have given us so much.”

Anni Domingo, an actress, director, and writer, emphasised the significance of Fraser’s story: “The story of Flip Fraser has to be told for it is an important part of Black Theatre History.”
