Originally from Barbados, she relocated to the UK in response to the call for assistance in rebuilding the country. In 1965, May Tanner joined the Bristol Royal Infirmary, where she dedicated herself to providing exceptional care to patients.

Known affectionately as "Dolly", D'Oliveira had a successful career playing county cricket for Worcestershire from 1964 to 1980.
